EPOC stands for Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (say that 10 times fast!!) Imagine driving for an hour in your car. When you finally stop at home and you put your hand on the hood of the car, we all know that the engine will still be hot and needs time to cool off. This is basically the same thing that happens in your body.
When you work out, your muscles use up the energy in your body faster than it can be replaced. So once you stop working out, your metabolism (including oxygen) is still working extra hard to get things back in order. Even more interestingly, this effect is maximized with certain types of workouts, with high intensity resistance training at the top of the list. Hmmmm… sound familiar anyone?
This type of workout burns more calories than running at a steady state over long distance with the added benefit that you can burn the same amount of calories in less time! Amazingly, this affect lasts up to 24 hours after your workout and can burn an extra 50-150 calories while you are laying on the couch watching The Walking Dead.
This is why EPOC is called the afterburner affect! So come join us and get your afterburners working!
