We know that exercise is great for helping keep those muffin tops under control, which… let’s be honest… is why most of us workout. But it’s important to know that when you’re running miles and pumping iron, you are actually pumping up your brain as well!
Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain which primes our neurons to LEARN through a chemical called BDNF (Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor). It also helps with storing those new facts you just learned into long term memory. If you are ever struggling to concentrate, just go out for a quick walk to get the juices flowing. And if you are making exercise a regular part of your day, you are multi tasking by getting stronger AND smarter!
For the parents out there – this applies to your kids too!! While children are growing and learning, exercise is a critical part of making sure they are meeting their full potential.
I absolutely love this Ted Video about exercise and learning in schools. Here is a shorter video as well showing the results of a study right in Naperville about students improving in school because of an exercise program!
So after every work out, give yourself a high-five because not only did you make your body stronger, you made your brain smarter!
