I think it’s interesting that men usually want to gain muscle definition and women usually shun the thought of it…
But seriously… muscle is an incredibly important part of your long term health.
And contrary to public opinion, lifting heavy does NOT mean your muscles are going to get that much bigger! Realistically, men can gain 2 pounds of muscle per month, and for women it’s half that at 1 pound per month. And that’s if you are trying HARD! Bodybuilders work their butts off to get those bulging muscles! Trust me, you are not going to wake up one day with muscles bulging everywhere unless you really really want it!!
Once you are over 30, it becomes even more difficult to put on muscle and your body actually starts to deteriorate. At this point, a resistance program will help maintain your muscle mass.
Muscles are important for billions of reasons, but I’ll name some below:
- More muscle = more calories being burned at rest. That’s pretty cool, right?
- Resistance training reduces the risk for osteoporosis
- Studies have shown that having more muscle means you will LIVE LONGER
- Muscle helps prevent or alleviate the symptoms of arthritis
- Muscle makes you body look good!
Please stop blaming muscles for making you look bulky. Please respect your amazing body. As you get older you will want to be able to do simple things like walk up the stairs and not fall. Being “old” may seem really far away, but it’s important to think about your long term quality of life. The things you are doing right now… today…. affects the rest of your life!
